Painting Your Home ‘Green’ — Eco paint tips |
Published by Green by Design under Green Building

We all love having color on our walls. How safe is it? Have you actually ever thought about it? What is the source of the headache that comes with freshly painted walls? There are VOCs in our paint, toxins that are called Volatile Organic Compounds. These toxins can release low levels of emissions into our indoor air for years after application. There is talk that they are even carcinogenic. This is where the smell of “fresh paint” comes from, and the headaches and dizziness.
The good news is that there are alternatives being developed for the consumer. Next time you are in the market for paint, look at the VOC levels. There are a few brands that stand out. Home Depot will be the exclusive supplier of a paint called Freshaire Choice, a VOC-free paint. Even the color added to the paint is VOC-free. Mythic is another brand of the same caliber, as well as Benjamin Moore Aura. If you do not have access to these brands, then become an educated consumer, looking at labels and learning to ask the right questions. Does this product have the Greenguard seal? What are the acceptable levels of VOC to have in paint? (Hint: no more than 50 grams per liter for all finishes—set by California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District.)
Looking at the cost of these healthly alternatives is good news. They run about $30-$45 per gallon. It isn’t a high price to pay for peace of mind.

Just as this article says, I guess I never gave paint a thought other than I knew lead-based paint was dangerous. I didn’t know that paint could be organic, eco-safe, solvent free??? There is a whole world out there of these products! Eco Organic paint, ecospaints.com are VOC free and solvent free and they have a large range of paints and stains. Although I am no where close to being at the point where I would want to make my own paint as author Annie Berthold-Bond has recipes in her book “Better Basics for the Home.” I am definitely thinking about using eco-friendly paints as I will be in the market to purchase a home next summer!
