Newark, New Jersey Celebrates First LEED Certified Homes

Published by Green by Design under Green Building, LEED

The Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD) is leading by example by taking the low-income neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey from an area in need of repair into an urban eco-village. Leading the revitalization of an emerging arts and cultural district, Lincoln Park could be considered one of the nation’s best practices in sustainable urban development.

The completion of The Washington Street Mixed Use Buildings makes LPCCD the largest U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Homes provider in the State of New Jersey. These homes are also the only mixed-use LEED Homes in New Jersey and the first LEED Homes built in an urban area in the State.

LEED has been a certification program mainly used by the commercial building sector, though recently USGBC has released certification for homes. About 10,000 homes across the U.S. participated in this initial pilot program from 2005 to 2007.

In the 1980s it was R2000 homes that represented the state of the art in energy-efficient design, since then our environmental awareness has grown tremendously, with one technological advancement after another.
